Everyone knows about opinions.... Slower ground speed will just help you till the soil much finer. Slow is good!! As far as a brand of rototiller, I bought a Landpride 1558 and am very pleased with its performance. My suggestion is to shop around and look at all of the brands. Price is important, but features are important and construction are important too. You may find that paying a a few dollars more will get you more flexability and longer service. Get the salepeople to give you the pretty-colored glossies and compare. Also, a dealer that sells more equipment can be more flexable in their pricing. Oops, almost forgot, go to every manuafacturers website to gather information prior to going to the dealer. You'd be surprised at how little they know.....

FJ45, I have a 4100 with R4 tires and get a little scuffing. It is usually when I have the forward speed a little high or the ground is a little moist. I have found that if you take it slow you'll reduce the chance of scuffing. Also, do you have your 4 wheel drive engaged? That will increase your chances of scuffing also. Good luck.

Certainly glad to hear that your wife was not injured.

I would suggest that you either get your tires filled with liquids or make/buy a ballast box for your 3pt hitch. I chose the later. Also, invest in a tiltmeter.

Yesterday, I took my 4100 (with a tiltmeter) to a friends house so to mow his lawn. His lawn tractor's engine is blown. After a bit, I let him use the tractor. It's an HST with a belly mower, R4 tires, and no ballast. His back yard has some steeper inclines (15 to 20%). It was the afternoon and the grass was dry. On one part which was close to me, he was moving forward at a right angle to the slope very slowly and the front tires began to slide. I mentioned it to him and he began to be a little more cautious.

I guess what I'm saying here is that working on slopes is dangerous. One must use caution and be ready for anything. And by all means, invest in a tiltmeter. $30 or so dollars or a rollover.... what's more expensive. It doesn't prevent a rollover, just makes you more aware of your working environment.

Kay, I would like to find out the same information. I just finished my first 50 hr maintenance and found out the same thing about some of the socket sets. I have an impact socket set for standard and metric sizes. A bunch of the bolts are in between. It's maddening. I certainly don't want to try and use regular sockets on an air-driven impact wrench.

Alan, you've asked a loaded question. As previously mentioned, you should go to each of the dealers, discuss what you plan on doing, test drive the suggested model, LISTEN to your wife as she will have a direct bearing on the final choice, and then begin to deal. I chose the JD 4100 because it fit our budget and current needs. NH and Kubota were comparably priced in our area (liked blue, no like pumpkin ;-o )The FEL and MMM are very easy to remove on a level surface. Key word is level surface. If you don't have a concrete pad on your site or a shed to store the equipment, build one. You'll thank yourself later. For the first month after receiving my 4100, I stored my FEL on the ground. Needless to say, a lot flowery language and sweat was apparent when mounting the FEL. I now store it on our parking pad. Takes 5 to 10 minutes depending on how fast I move. It takes longer to move the MMM into position than actual attachment. I have no experience or have talked to anyone about the other implement attachment/detachment. Oh yes, I would strongly suggest getting the HST. Makes your life easy and your wifes. Good luck. Terry

Art, I access JPLAN from both home and work. I have never had to wait longer than a minute to get a response. At home I get a maximum of 26.4 bps. At work, our workstations access the corporate network at 100mbs (work for WorldCom, got big pipes!!!). It is probably something to do with your workstation configuration. I'm no PC guru, however, I try to install all the latest patches from Microsoft and for your virus software. Matter of fact, look at how you have your virus software configured. Hmmm, as a matter of fact, are you using McAfee Firewall. If you are, deactivate it. It is a real hog!!! Terry

Trae, I spoke with one of the JD dealers in my area and he said that they are just beginning to receive information about the offerings. I appears as though JD will sell Woods implements with the Frontier branding with the same list price as Woods. The determining factor will be how much the dealer expects to sell during the next year (begins on Aug 1st). So, the higher the volume of the local dealer, the deeper they can discount. This is based on what the dealer thinks they may sell. I would hate to be a dealer trying to guess what his sales are to be for the next year. Looks like the best thing to do is talk to your local JD and Woods dealer to see who can give you the best price.

Danny, I also cruised the web looking for some type of lawn sweeper and found nothing except units for lawn and garden tractors. Sounds as though a product idea has emerged.... I wouldn't mind finding one either. I have a lot of trees on property and I would like to be able to clean them up for composting. Good luck.

Kevin, I change my operating RPM all the time except when using the PTO. I do not remember reading anything in the operators manual about keeping the operating RPM at the PTO range except for operating the PTO. Gee, maybe I'm doing something wrong!!!

Great news!! I'm a dense at times so let me get this clear. You switch the tires and reverse the rim and this gets you an additional 3" of stance. With that in mind you keep the tread direction the same and the valves will be then on the inside, correct!! Not a big deal. Just trying to understand.....

Sounds like you might be better off with a bush hog rather than a finish mower. The bush hog will take the punishment better than a finish mower. Especially, when it comes to running over small brush and fallen branches.

If you are being professionally moved, you can ask the moving company to load up your tractor also. When I moved from New Mexico to Virginia, I had them move my '72 Bronco and only had to pay drayage. Just ask, all they can say is no. Terry

I also have a 4100. I looked at Kubota, Boomers, and found out that they were fairly close in the specs and prices (list). You have to check out the dealer and see what they can do for you (pricing and service). As far as buying the FEL or not, I found that the difference in payments was $40.00 a month to include the FEL. If you do not get the FEL, make sure that you at least puchase the DSCV. It is cheaper than having it installed later on. Keep in mind that you will probably have to take your tractor back to the dealer to get the FEL installed. Sooo, with that in mind, possible drayage back and forth to the dealer, install changes, etc. These are questions to ask prior to purchase. As far as the mower, I also went with the 54" belly mower. I do not have many straight and long mowing areas and it sure does make mowing easer. I couldn't justify the money for the additional 6" of mowing for a 60" belly mower. Also, you didn't mention what kind of tires you were thinking about. I have the R4 industrials and they sure do help in certain situations. If you primarily going to do mowing, then consider the turf tires.

I have a JD 4100. It appears as though there is some kind of government "standard" that manufacturers adhere to. Check your owners guide as they may have some information. Most tractor owners will tell you to go by your instincts. If it feels bad, don't do it!!. To be honest, the best thing to do is to "cruise" the message boards to glean as much information as possible. Jplan has been very informative for me. I'm a newbie when it comes to using tractors and spend time trying to understand what I need to do to operate and use my tractor safely. One, I like living!!! Two, I have a large investment in my equipment and want to make sure that it is used correctly and lasts as long a possible (being frugle is a good thing!!). Good luck, Terry

Kevin, I know the feeling well. When using the FEL, I always have the ballast box attached. It was well worth the money (box with 5 80lb bags of concrete). It does stabilize the tractor when using the FEL. I have used a bush hog once with the FEL attached. I took the FEL off and used front ballast weights (4 @ 42lbs) and it felt somewhat better. It also helped with manueverability. I have had one bad incident where I got thrown off of my seat while using the FEL on an incline. The engine stopped. I was looking up at my tractor in amazement. I was lucky not to get hurt. So, use ballast on front or 3 pt hitch when necessary, wear your seatbelt, and be very careful. If it feels bad, there's a chance that it will be bad!!!! Follow your instincts and feelings.

Garret, I have a 4100 HST with a FEL and have been successfull at knocking down small trees. Clearing out a few acres would be pushing things though. Since you have construction going on, I would suggest that you have them cut out what you do not want before using your tractor to clear your property. The FEL is good for moving materials around and general pushing stumps, etc. I would suggest that you get a rear blade to remove snow and grade your driveway. I only have had my 4100 for a few months and have talked with neighbors and Jplan posters/repliers and found a wealth of information. Everyone seems to agree that a rear blade is much more helpful than the FEL for leveling and grading. I haven't purchased one yet myself but will have one before the end of summer. Additionally, if you can afford it, you may want to consider the 4200 as it will give you a little more power for the money and help you with some larger tasks. Hope this helps. LOL.

Sounds reasonable. I bought a 4100 HST with FEL, 54" mower, grill guard, 4 front end weights, r4 industrial tires, and a 58" Landpride tiller for $16.3K in March. Do you have any other JD dealers in your area. You might be able to work the numbers. As a bonus, in Maryland, if the equipment is to be used for agricultural purposes, you do not have to pay state tax. Check to see if that applies in your area. At 5%, it made the difference in buying the FEL. Good luck.
